Aggregate U.S. agricultural supply response is modeled through a modified partial adjustment model, where the effects of weather and other temporal stochastic effects are structured to be purely static, while the effects of price and technology, or trend, are dynamic. The model is applied to a time series of aggregate U.S. farm output, aggregate U.S. crop production, and aggregate U.S. livestock and livestock products production for several sample periods within the period 1911-1958. The three aggregate output indexes are tested for irreversibilities in supply response, and no evidence of a definitive irreversible supply function is found for any of the dynamic supply models. The use of a nonstochastic difference equation to model the aggregate farm... |

The taxonomy of the family Megaloeporaceae (Lecanorales, lichenised ascomycetes) has been revised basing on an examination of morphology, anatomy and chemistry of thallus and apothecia, and of apothecium ontogeny. The Megalosporaceae are mainly characterised by features of the apothecium ontogeny, by thallus- and apothecium-chemistry, and by a range of spore types. Three genera have been distinguished within this family, Austroblastenia (gen. nov.) with two species, occuring in Australia and New Zealand, Megaloblastenia (gen. nov.) with two species, occuring in Australia, New Zealand and southern South America, and Megalospora, with twenty-five species, concentrated in Australasia, but with representatives throughout the tropical and warmtemperate zones of... |

A new species of marine triclad, Ectoplana undata n. sp., ectoparasitic on the horseshoe crab Tachypleus gigas, is described. Cocoons of triclads were found on T. gigas as well as on the horseshoe crab Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda; since from the latter species no triclads were collected, it remains unknown whether these cocoons are those of E. undata or of another species. The genus Ectoplana, though poorly defined, is here retained, for stated reasons, pending a revision of the Procerodidae. |

During identification and study of the materials of the genus Blepharis Juss. in the Central National Herbarium (CAL) of the Botanical Survey of India the authors came across some specimens (Lawson 314) from Tavancore, which was identified as B. molluginifolia aff But critical study revealed that the typical molluginifolia is a different species from which the new taxon can be distinguished by several characters. The species is named after M.A. Lawson who collected the specimen for the first time. |

During a collecting trip for microfungi in Andhra Pradesh, India, the senior author collected an unusual fungus showing characteristics of both Myrothecium Tode: Fr. and Sarcopodium Ehrenb. Recent taxonomic accounts are available for both genera (e.g. Tulloch, 1972; Sutton, 1973, 1981; Ellis, 1971, 1976; Matsushima, 1971, 1975, 1981; Nag Raj & George, 1960). The genera comprise sporodochial or somewhat synnematous hyphomycetes forming conidia in slimy masses from densely aggregated phialides. In Sarcopodium the hymenium is interspersed with often coiled, branched, pigmented, mostly echinulate setae, whereas in Myrothecium the setae, if present, occur at the periphery of the conidioma and are straight, unbranched, hyaline or pale, and usually... |

A new species, Zygogynum vinkii, is described within the woody Ranalean family Winteraceae. It differs from other species of the endemic New Caledonian genus in having 302-371 stamens per flower. Unspecialized cells of the lower leaf surface are covered with cuticular papillae of a type hitherto unreported in Zygogynum. The three species with non-tetrad pollen, Z. pomiferum, Z. mackeei and Z. vinkii are compared. |

Random variation in output may lead to serious bias in cost function estimates. Despite the availability of simple, consistent instrumental variable estimators to deal with this problem, most empirical studies appear to have ignored this errors-in-variables problem, or dealt with it in an ad hoc manner. In this note, an instrumental variable approach is suggested, and applied to the estimation of cost-output relationships for a sample of irrigated citrus farms. Ordinary least squares was found to result in a statistically significant bias. Although this bias did not alter the economic interpretation of the results for the sample used, the bias is likely to be more serious for samples with greater chance variation in output. Thus, it is argued that all cost... |
